JUST CANYONING Route Grading System

Canyoning is not a playground; it is a technical environment. Our grading system provides an authoritative breakdown of vertical complexity, hydraulic intensity, and survival commitment.

Dimension 01

Vertical Character (V)

Technical difficulty from rope work, pitch count, anchor accessibility, and the climbing grade required.

Vertical canyon waterfall
V1–V2

Basic Technical

Simple rappels under 30m on fixed anchors. Easy down-climbs.

Beginner
Show ladder
V1
Entry Level
Rappels under 10m
  • Rappels < 10m
  • Very easy climbing or down-climbing
V2
Beginner
Rappels under 30m · accessible anchors
  • Anchors easily accessible
  • Rappels < 30m
  • Easy climbing or down-climbing
V3–V5

Intermediate Vertical

Multi-pitch rappels up to 60m. Technical rigging, hanging belays introduced, climbing to 5.9. Active waterlines through the descent.

Show ladder
V3
Intermediate
Max rappel < 45m · climbing up to 5.6
  • Anchors easily accessible
  • Max rappel height < 45m
  • Adequate spacing between drops for team reorganisation
  • Low-flow vertical water features
  • Pools at the base of rappels are calm
  • Systems are easy to rig
  • Climbing difficulty up to 5.6 (rope protection possible on minor exposed sections)
V4
Intermediate High
Rappels may exceed 45m · climbing up to 5.8
  • Anchors not easily accessible
  • Rappels may exceed 45m
  • Rigging is technical but manageable
  • Multiple-pitch rappels with ample stance platforms for anchors
  • Sharp edges require rope protection
  • Low to moderate flow vertical waterlines that may affect balance or cause entrapment
  • Pools at the base may be dynamic
  • Climbing difficulty up to 5.8 (exposed sections require rope protection)
V5
Advanced
Hanging belays · climbing up to 5.9
  • Multiple-pitch rappels (hanging belays / anchors)
  • Rappels may require crossing dynamic waterlines
  • Moderate to high vertical flow (precise rappel line, balance, and line selection)
  • Difficult rope retrieval — may require swimming with rope recovery
  • Climbing difficulty up to 5.9
V6–V7

Expert Vertical

Pitches >60m through powerful waterlines. Hard-to-reach anchors, complex rope management, climbing 5.10a+.

Extreme
Show ladder
V6
Expert
High flow · climbing up to 5.10a
  • Anchors are very difficult to reach
  • Traverse lines are extremely difficult to rig
  • High to very high vertical flow
  • Rappelling through waterlines is very challenging (efficient execution, balance, and route-finding)
  • Pools at base in dynamic and strong current
  • Climbing difficulty up to 5.10a
V7
Extreme
Continuous waterfalls · climbing > 5.10b
  • Extremely poor visibility and multiple obstacles on route
  • Continuous waterfalls with no breaks
  • Holding breath underwater may be necessary
  • Pools at base in violent hydraulics and very strong currents
  • Climbing difficulty exceeds 5.10b
Dimension 02

Aquatic Character (A)

Water is the primary hazard. We measure swim distances, current intensity, recirculation risk, and required cold-water exposure.

A1–A3

Calm Water

Optional swims or short crossings in still / lightly moving water.

Show ladder
A1
Entry Level
Dry or calm water · swims optional
  • Dry or calm water
  • Optional swims only
A2
Beginner
Calm-water swims < 10m · jumps < 3m
  • Swim across calm water < 10m
  • Standard jumps < 3m
A3
Intermediate
Calm-water swims < 30m · some moving water
  • Swim across calm water < 30m
  • Swimming in some sections with moving water
A4–A5

Active Currents

Extended cold-water exposure, swims in moderate currents, brief recirculation risk.

Show ladder
A4
Intermediate High
Cold-water exposure · moderate currents
  • Extended exposure to cold water
  • Swimming in moderate currents in certain areas
A5
Advanced
Heat loss risk · brief recirculations
  • Extended exposure to cold water causing rapid heat loss
  • Currents may alter swim trajectory
  • Dangerous currents such as recirculations and hydraulics can briefly trap swimmers
A6–A7

Violent Hydraulics

Very strong currents. Recirculations may trap swimmers for extended periods.

Extreme
Show ladder
A6
Expert
Strong currents · moderate trap risk
  • Strong currents make it difficult to reach target swim lines
  • Dangerous currents (recirculations, hydraulics) may trap swimmers for moderate durations
A7
Extreme
Very strong currents · extended trap risk
  • Very strong currents make it extremely difficult to reach target swim lines
  • Dangerous currents may trap swimmers for extended periods
Dimension 03

Time & Escape (T)

Retreat difficulty, escape-route availability, and total expedition duration. Assumes a 6–8 person team — larger or less experienced groups need more time.
